Thailand genre and subgenre preferences for series

  • Thai audiences gave the largest share of attention to drama series in this report. 45.2% of demand for shows in Thailand was for a drama series in Q2 2023.
  • The animation genre had its third largest share of demand in Thailand of markets in this report. The 13.4% of demand that Thai audiences gave to animated series was also above the global share of demand for this genre (12.9%).
  • The 2.3% of demand that Thai audiences gave to the documentary genre was less than half the global share of demand for this genre (5.1%).

  • Thailand was unique in this report as the only market where romantic drama ranked as the most in-demand subgenre. This was due to a large number of local romantic dramas with high demand.
  • Romance appears to be a common theme in successful content in Thailand. It was the only market in this report where romantic comedy ranked in the ten most in-demand subgenres.
  • Competition reality also succeeded in Thailand. Thailand was one of two markets in this report where this subgenre achieved its highest rank, as the fourth most in-demand subgenre.

Thailand originals share of demand and demand distribution

  • The Thai network, Channel 3, accounted for the largest share of demand in Thailand in Q2 2023. 6.8% of demand for series in Thailand was for a show from Channel 3.
  • Another local station, GMM 25, had the second largest share of demand for its original series in Q2. 5.8% of demand for shows in Thailand was for a show from GMM 25.
  • Netflix originals accounted for a smaller share of demand in Thailand this quarter (5.5%) than in any other market in this report.

  • GAP (ทฤษฎีสีชมพู)a local drama from Channel 3 was the most in-demand series in Thailand for Q2 2023. It had 25.1 times the average series demand.
  • Amazon Prime Video found success with local original content in Thailand this quarter. The Prime Video original, Home School (นักเรียนต้องขัง), ranked as the second most in-demand series overall in Thailand this quarter with 18.2 times the average series demand.
  • The most in-demand reality series in Thailand for the quarter was Masterchef Thailand, from Channel 7, which had 15.2 times the average series demand.
