How Spy Thrillers Are Fueling Subscriber Retention on Netflix

Netflix’s spy thriller “The Night Agent” made a big splash upon its March 2023 debut—it delivered $67.7 million in global subscriber revenue for the platform in Q2 2023, according to Parrot Analytics' Streaming Economics. During that quarter, the series was Netflix’s top revenue contributor globally, outperforming major titles like “Shadow and Bone” and “Black Mirror.” However, “The Night Agent” has since experienced a considerable decline in revenue over subsequent quarters. Since Netflix releases all episodes of its original series at once, highly engaging thrillers like “The Night Agent” often draw cosiderably attention upon release, attracting new subscribers to the platform. After this initial period, however, most of the audience interested in the show has already engaged with it, leading to a natural decline in revenue contribution.

This aligns with Netflix’s broader trend of front-loading revenue impact for major new originals, where strong engagement in the first weeks of availability translates into an immediate boost in subscriber revenue. In total, since its release, the show has delivered $136.9 million in global revenue for the platform through the end of Q3 2024, meaning that half of its financial impact occurred during its initial quarter.

A title can drive subscriber revenue to a streaming platform by two primary factors: subscriber acquisition and retention. Following its peak quarter, the series has primarily contributed to Netflix as a retention driver, keeping subscribers on platform rather than driving new sign-ups. This is largely due to the high affinity between “The Night Agent” and other spy thrillers on Netflix. The platform effectively retains audiences interested in espionage-driven content by offering similar shows such as “Treason,” “The Recruit,” “The Spy,” and “Kleo”.

In many ways, Netflix’s collection of spy thrillers serves a similar role to long-running linear procedurals, keeping genre enthusiasts engaged across multiple titles. This indicates that “The Night Agent’s” contribution extends well beyond its season release period, reinforcing Netflix’s strategy of leveraging content affinity to maximize long-term audience retention. This strategy has helped Netflix to maintain the lower churn rate of all main SVOD platforms across all the global regions over the last years.
