Netherlands genre and subgenre preferences
- Only a slight majority of demand for shows in the Netherlands was for the drama genre (51.4%), making the Netherlands one of the least drama-loving markets as the share of demand for dramas is well below the global share for this genre (59.5%).
- The share of demand for reality shows in the Netherlands (17.7%) was second only to reality-loving America in this report. It was also above the global share of demand for the genre (11.9%) indicating a particular love of reality content in this market.
- Game shows also made up a larger share of demand in the Netherlands (6.1%) than they did globally (3.8%).
- Travel content resonated with Dutch audiences. In Q3 2024 this subgenre accounted for 1.2% of demand for shows in the Netherlands. Even so, this is still an underperformance relative to the share of supply these shows make up (1.6%).
- Science content also was uniquely popular with Dutch audiences. This subgenre also made up 1.2% of demand but only 0.8% of titles, pointing to an opportunity to expand the supply of science content here.
- Superhero series accounted for a smaller share of demand in the Netherlands (2.6%) than other markets in this report. Even though these series are very popular in general, they resonate less with Dutch audiences.
Netherlands originals demand share and digital originals demand distribution
- High demand for reality content helped Discovery branded originals win with Dutch audiences. Discovery shows accounted for 2.6% of demand for all series in the Netherlands in Q3 2024.
- While BBC content made up a larger share of demand in Ireland than the Netherlands (6.4% vs. 4.7%), BBC ranked higher in the Netherlands as the third largest channel or platform by demand share than any other market in this report pointing to the relative strength of BBC series here.
- Shows from a Disney branded channel or platform made up a smaller share of demand in the Netherlands (3.4%) than in any other market in this report.
- Reality content from the US is popular with Dutch audiences. Both The Voice (US) and Love Island USA ranked higher in the Netherlands than in any other market in this report (#23 and #26 respectively).
- Top Gear was the most in-demand BBC series in the Netherlands. It ranked higher here (#54) than in any other market in this report.
- The Handmaid’s Tale ranked higher in demand in the Netherlands than in any other market in this report as the 48th most in-demand show in Q3 2024.
