Saudi Arabia genre and subgenre preferences
- Saudi Arabia was tied with Egypt for the highest share of demand for the drama genre in this report. Both markets had a 59.6% share of demand for dramas in Q1 2024.
- Saudi Arabia had a lower share of demand for variety content (0.9%) than any other market covered in this report.
- Over a quarter of demand was for action series in Saudi Arabia (27.0%). This was larger than the global share of demand for action series (23.8%).
- Apocalyptic content punches above its weight in Saudi Arabia. These shows make up 1.4% of demand but only 0.2% of titles.
- Saudi Arabia had the second largest share of demand for suspense content in this report. 2.5% of demand for shows in Q1 2024 was for a suspense series, which is well above the global share of demand for this type of content (1.2%).
- The teen subgenre failed to break through with Saudi audiences. Only 0.7% of demand for shows was for the teen subgenre, the lowest of markets in this report.
Saudi Arabia original share of demand and demand distribution
- Shahid originals made up the largest share of demand for series in Saudi Arabia, accounting for 8.2% of demand for all shows here in Q1 2024.
- Original content that first aired on an MBC branded channel accounted for 6.8% of demand for shows in Saudi Arabia, tying with the world’s largest streamer Netflix here.
- Original content from Turkish channel ATV drove 2.0% of demand for all shows in Saudi Arabia in the first quarter of 2024. This was the only market in this report where this channel broke into the top 15 by demand share for the quarter.
- Shahid’s Al Rihan, which premiered in March for Ramadan, still managed to rank as the 28th most in-demand show of Q1 2024 in Saudi Arabia, a higher ranking than in any other market in this report.
- MBC’s Bab Al-Hara ranked as the fifth most in-demand show of Q1 2024 in Saudi Arabia, a higher rank than it reached in any other market in this report.
- The Turkish drama, Wild Heart (Yabani), won fans in Saudi Arabia outside of its home market. It ranked as the 17th most in-demand show of Q1 2024.
