Philippines Genre and Subgenre Preferences for Series

  • Audiences in the Philippines were the most horror-loving in this report. They gave 7.0% of demand for shows to the horror genre, above the global share of demand for horror series (5.7%).
  • Action content also resonated with audiences in the Philippines where it accounted for 25.9% of demand for all series. This was the second largest demand share for the action genre in this report.
  • The documentary genre made up a smaller share of demand in the Philippines (4.7%) than in most markets we covered. It was also well below the global share of demand for documentary series (7.7%).

  • Audiences in the Philippines gave the largest share of demand to LGBTQI+ content of markets in this report. 6.3% of demand for shows was for one of these series.
  • The Philippines gave the second largest share of demand to the superhero subgenre in this report. 4.3% of demand for shows was for a superhero series, well above the global share of demand for this content (2.9%).
  • The true crime subgenre struggled to break through with audiences in the Philippines. Only 0.7% of demand for shows was for a true crime series, below the global share of demand for this subgenre (1.2%).

  • Original content from GMA Network, a local Philippine broadcaster accounted for 2.6% of
    demand for shows in the Philippines, just slightly beating out the share of demand for content from international heavyweight BBC.
  • Original series from another local player, ABS-CBN, also ranked among the top platforms
    accounting for 2.4% of demand for shows in the Philippines.
  • Original series from a Disney branded channel or platform accounted for 5.4% of demand for shows in the Philippines, above the 3.9% share of demand for these shows globally.

  • It’s Showtime!, from ABS-CBN, was the most in-demand local series in the Philippines in Q2 2024, ranking 25th in terms of demand.
  • Local adaptations of shows from around the world caught the attention of Philippine audiences. What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim (PH) and Running Man Philippines are both based on Korean series while The Voice Kids Philippines is an adaptation of the internationally successful format.
  • Of course, sometimes the original Is hard to beat. The original RuPaul’s Drag Race ranked as the seventh most in-demand show in the Philippines, higher than in any other market in this report and significantly above the local adaptation, Drag Race Philippines which premiered in 2022.
