  • South Korea gave the largest share of demand to the drama genre of markets in this report.
59.5% of demand for shows was for a drama here in Q2 2024, boosted in part by a robust supply of local dramas.
  • Conversely, South Koreans gave the smallest share of demand to the comedy genre in this
report. Only 36% of demand for shows was for a comedy.
  • The variety genre also stands out in the Korean market. 4.2% of demand for shows was for a variety series, which is significantly above the global share of demand for this genre (1.5%).

  • Mirroring the struggles of comedy in the Korean market more broadly, sitcoms underperformed here. South Korea was the only market in this report where the sitcom subgenre had a lower share of demand (3.1%) than its share of supply (4.5%).
  • LGBTQI+ content struggled to break through with Korean audiences to the same extent it did in other markets. Only 3.6% of demand was for an LGBTQI+ series in South Korea, the lowest of markets in this report.
  • Travel series made up a larger share of demand in South Korea (1.7%) than any other market in this report and significantly above the global share of demand for this content (0.7%).

  • Netflix ranked as the top platform in terms of demand for its original series and the 10.6% of
demand for Netflix originals in Korea was larger than any other market in this report, underscoring that Netflix has been able to succeed in this market even with tough competition from local channels.
  • Five of the six top channels by demand share in Korea were local channels. Original series from these five top players collectively accounted for over a quarter of demand in Korea in Q2 2024.
  • While Netflix has succeeded in Korea, Prime Video has struggled to break through with its original content here. The 2.1% of demand for Amazon Prime originals in South Korea was lower than any other market in this report.

  • Many local channels and platforms are successfully competing for audience attention in South Korea. The most in-demand show of the quarter was Queen of Tears, a drama from tvN, which broke through in a number of international markets as well.
  • While South Korea has made a name for itself internationally with its dramas, local content in other genres also ranks high at home. For example, Running Man, a variety series from SBS was the second most in-demand show for the quarter.
  • Lovely Runner was the most in-demand comedy series in Korea in Q2 2024 and ranked as the fourth most in-demand show overall.
