Egypt genre and subgenre preferences for series
- Egypt was tied with Saudi Arabia for the highest share of demand for the drama genre in this report. Both markets had a 59.6% share of demand for dramas in Q1 2024.
- While dramas in general have high demand in Egypt, two types of dramas would likely not do well. The fantasy and science fiction genres had lower demand in Egypt than any other market in this report with a 13.0% and 6.9% share of demand respectively.
- The horror genre also struggled to break through with audiences in Egypt. Only 4.3% of demand for shows was for a horror series, which is well below the global share of demand for this genre (5.8%).
- The suspense subgenre was notably popular in Egypt where these titles made up 4.4% of demand for all series. This was the largest share in this report and significantly above the global share of demand for suspense content (1.2%).
- The legal and procedural subgenres struggled to gain traction in Egypt, The share of demand for these shows was roughly in line with the share of supply for these subgenres. However, the share of demand for these subgenres here (0.7% and 1.0% respectively) was lower than other markets.
- Egypt was one of only a few markets where the anime subgenre had a lower share of demand (2.9%) than its share of supply (3.1%).
Egypt originals share of demand and demand distribution
- MBC original series accounted for the largest share of demand in Egypt in Q1 2024 (7.7%).
- Original content from local streamer, WATCH iT, accounted for 4.6% of demand for all shows in Egypt in Q1 2024.
- Two local broadcast channels, DMC and CBC, ranked among the top 15 platforms in terms of demand for their original content. These channels made up a 2.7% and 2.3% share of demand for shows respectively.
- The new variety series from Shahid, Ramez Gab Min El Akher, premiered in March for Ramadan and still managed to take the top spot as the most in-demand show in its home market of Egypt.
- The MBC series, Jafar El Omda, ranked higher in Egypt than in any other market in this report as the 25th most in-demand show of Q1 2024.
- Netflix’s AlRawabi School For Girls ranked as the 55th most in-demand show in Egypt in Q1 2024, a higher rank than in any other market in this report.
