Japan genre and subgenre preferences for series

  • Japan had the largest share of demand for the animation genre in this report. 46% of demand for shows was for an animated series in Q1 2024, boosted in large part by the popularity of local anime content here.
  • The fantasy genre accounted for 30% of demand in Japan which is significantly above the global share of demand for this content (19.1%).
  • The reality genre made up a smaller share of demand in Japan (7.0%) than in any other market in this report and was below the global share of demand for reality content (12.6%).

  • Japan was the only market in this report where sitcoms were oversaturated. The share of demand for this subgenre (3.0%) was less than the share of supply of these series (4.6%).
  • Competition series made up a significantly lower share of demand in Japan (1.6%). This is half the global share of demand that the competition subgenre makes up (3.2%).
  • Medical shows have room for expansion in Japan. These shows drive 1.5% of demand but only account for 1.1% of titles.

  • The five largest channels by demand share in Japan were all local Japanese channels. Tokyo MX led the pack with a 10.5% share of demand for all series in Q1 2024.
  • Netflix, squeezed by local competition, had its smallest share of demand for its original series in Japan of all markets in this report (5.8%).
  • Content from local channels was so dominant in Japan that the top 15 channels/platforms accounted for over 70% of demand for all shows in this market, a much greater concentration among the top players than in other markets.

  • The historical drama, Dear Radiance, was the highest ranked live action series in Japan in Q1 2024 as the fourth most in-demand show for the quarter.
  • Nogizaka Under Construction is an example of a variety series that has succeeded with Japanese audiences. It was the 23rd most in-demand show for Q1 2024 in this market.
  • New anime series, Delicious in Dungeon, ranked as the 34th most in-demand show in Japan in Q1 2024.
