Malaysia genre and subgenre preferences for series
- The variety genre had notable success in Malaysia. These shows made up 2.8% of demand in this market, which is higher than in any other market in this report and above the global share of demand for variety content (1.7%).
- Historical content struggled to gain traction with audiences in Malaysia, only accounting for 2.5% of demand for all shows in Q1 2024 – the lowest share for this genre in this report.
- The share of demand for children’s content in Malaysia (13.7%) was more than double the global share of demand for children’s shows (6.3%).
- Reflecting high demand for both animated and children’s content in Malaysia, the cartoon subgenre strongly overperforms in this market. The 1.9% of titles this subgenre makes up drives 5.5% of demand.
- Performance content also has room to expand in Malaysia. These titles make up 1.1% of titles but drive 3% of demand in this market.
- Travel series make up a lower share of demand in Malaysia (0.2%) than most markets in this report. The share of demand for this content is also well below the share of supply that these titles make up.

- Original content from TV3, the local Malaysian broadcaster, accounted for 3.8% of demand for shows in Q1 2024 and ranked fourth in its home market.
- Original content from local company, Astro, made up 2.4% of demand for shows in Malaysia.
- High demand for kids’ content in Malaysia meant that shows from kids focused brands – Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon had a larger share of demand in this market (5.7%, 3.1%, 2.4%) than they did globally (3.9%, 1.9%, 1.6%).
- Local children’s series, Boboiboy: Galaxy, ranked as the second most in-demand show overall in Malaysia for Q1 2024, reflecting high demand in this market for both children’s and animated content.
- Local variety series, Meletop, ranked as the 18th most in-demand show overall in Malaysia, a market with high demand for variety series like this.
- Malaysia was a market open to international content from a variety of countries. Several Korean series like A Shop for Killers and Indian series like The Moon Began to Burn ranked higher here than in other markets we covered.
