United States genre and subgenre preferences
- American audiences had the largest share of demand for the reality genre (20.1%) across all markets in this report.
- Drama series accounted for 43.1% of demand for all series in the US in Q1 2024. This was the lowest share of demand for the drama genre in this report.
- The US was the most documentary-loving market in this report. The 14.8% share of demand for documentary series was larger than any other market in this report and significantly above the global share of demand for documentary series – 8.6%.
- Americans’ love of documentaries is reflected especially in the true crime subgenre. This subgenre accounted for 2.3% of demand which is its largest demand share across markets in this report. This is also larger than the share of titles that true crime series account for globally (2.0%).
- The food subgenre is a crowded space, potentially making it hard for titles to break through with these audiences. These shows accounted for 2.5% of titles but only 2.1% of demand for shows.
- Nature content made up a larger share of demand in the US (1.1%) than other markets. Supply and demand for this content was nearly balanced in this market with nature content accounting for 1.2% of titles.
United States originals share of demand and demand distribution
- Netflix originals accounted for 9% of demand for all series in the US, the largest share of demand for shows in the US from any channel or platform in Q1 2024. This is up from the platform’s 8.6% share of demand in 2023 and reflects continued competitive strength from Netflix.
- Content from NBC drove 5.9% of demand for series in the US and ranked second in terms of demand share in Q1 2024.
- Shows from a Discovery channel or platform accounted for a larger share of demand in the US (3.0%) than in any other market in this report. High demand in the US for reality and documentary series boosted this content here.
- The fourth season of HBO’s True Detective premiered in January and ranked as the 34th most in-demand show in the US for the quarter, higher than in any other market. In this report. Demand for the fourth season has also been higher than previous seasons.
- WWE Monday Night Raw, continues to have high demand in the US where it ranked as the 18th most in-demand show for the quarter. This validates Netflix’s decision to be the home of WWE Raw from January 2025.
- Long-running game show, Jeopardy!, continues to have unique cultural resonance in the US where it ranked higher than in any other market as the 70th most in-demand show in Q1 2024
