United States genre and subgenre preferences
- Nearly one fifth of demand for shows in the US was for a reality series (19.8%). This was the largest share of demand for the genre in this report.
- Despite the success of several high-profile action series like House of the Dragon and The Boys, the action genre accounted for a lower share of demand in the US (17.2%) than in any other market in this report.
- American audiences gave the largest share of demand for the talk-show genre across markets in this report. 3.5% of demand for shows in the US was for a talk-show series in Q2 2024.
- The true crime subgenre stands out as a bright spot helping to drive Americans’ high demand for documentary series. 2.3% of demand for shows was for a true crime series – higher than in any other market in this report and above the global share of demand for these shows (2.0%).
- The popularity of reality content in the US spans several different subgenres including property, celebrity, and lifestyle. American audiences gave a larger share of demand to these subgenres than other markets in this report.
- Procedural content punches above its weight in the US. The 0.8% of procedural titles account for 2.4% of demand for shows. However, this is merely in line with the global share of demand and several other markets have a higher demand share for procedural series.
United States originals share of demand and demand distribution
- Netflix originals accounted for the largest share of demand across platforms in the US. The 9.1% of demand for a Netflix series was up slightly from last quarter (9.0%) and reflects continued growth from the streamer.
- Content from ABC drove 4.1% of demand for series in the US which is a larger share of demand for this content than in any other market in this report.
- Shows from a Discovery channel or platform accounted for a larger share of demand in the US (3.0%) than in any other market in this report. High demand in the US for reality and documentary series helped this content succeed.
- With its latest season only around for two weeks of Q2, House of the Dragon still ranked as the fourth most in-demand show in the US for the quarter. Its finale aired August 4th, so expect even higher demand for the show in Q3.
- Long running CBS procedural, Blue Bloods, is going into its final season still beloved by audiences. The show ranked as the 61st most in-demand show in the US in Q2 ahead of its final season premiere set for October.
- Game Changer, a panel game show from the streamer, Dropout, ranked among the 100 most in demand shows in the US and higher here than in any other market in this report.
