I am guessing you may not have heard of Our Flag Means Death, a new pirate comedy on HBO Max. There hasn’t been much marketing for it, though once I heard about the talent attached, it’s a Taika Waititi project starring Waititi himself and Flight of the Conchords’ Rhys Darby, I was fully on board.
The concept, a pirate comedy, makes it seem like this would just be a pirate variant of What We Do in the Shadows, the Waititi vampire comedy on FX. Right away it feels little different. There are no talk-to-camera asides for one, and the first batch of debut episodes are not…very good? But by the end? That’s a different story, and why Our Flag Means Death is now the #1 most in-demand show on HBO or HBO Max, according to Parrot Analytics.
This past week with the final two episodes airing, Our Flag Means Death surpassed not only every other HBO Max show, but everything on HBO itself, including megahit Euphoria. It has 38.65x the demand of the average series, and Euphoria has 35.36x. This is…almost entirely word of mouth as people have started extolling the virtues of Our Flag Means Death far and wide, and it has a special place in the hearts of the LGBTQ community.
