YouTube tweaks Premium subscription with more free, ad-supported content

1 August, 2018

The paywall changes to YouTube Premium indicate the platform has potentially struggled to retain momentum following a buzzy rollout earlier this year. YouTube introduced Premium in May as a rebranding of its existing YouTube Red service. “Cobra Kai,” a spinoff off of the “Karate Kid,” helped support the launch and featured episodes that run roughly 30 minutes. The show outperformed popular series on rival platforms during the week of May 6-12 for the US, including “13 Reasons Why” and “Arrested Development” on Netflix and “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu, according to our research in a Variety release. “Cobra Kai” has been renewed for a second season.
