France genre and subgenre preferences

  • Animated content accounted for 24.7% of demand in France in 2023. This is the second largest share of demand for animation across all markets in this report.
  • Fantasy content resonates with French audiences. The fantasy genre was responsible for 22.5% of demandfor all shows in France in 2023–a larger share of demand for this genre than in any other market in this report.
  • The action genre made up a larger share of demand in France in 2023 (31.9%) than it did globally (30.4%).

  • Anime content excels in France where these shows account for nearly 9% of demand for all series. This is the highest share of demand for this genre in this report and is also significantly above the 3% share oftitles that these shows make up.
  • Food and fashion, two genres you might expect to succeed in France, actually make up a smaller share of demand in here than in any other market in this report (1.0% and 0.2% of demand respectively).
  • The politics subgenre has high demand in France where it accounts for 1.3% of demand for all series, which is more than in any other market in this report and more than twice the subgenre’s share of titles (0.6%).

  • Netflix had a commanding lead as the platform with the largest demand share in France in 2023. 8.7% of demand for shows was for a Netflix original. This is down from the platform’s 9.1% share in 2022 however.
  • The popularity of anime content in France was responsible for Tokyo MX reaching its largest share of demand in France in this report. 2.9% of demand for series was for a Tokyo MX original in 2023.
  • Canal+ original series accounted for 2.8% of demand in France in 2023, just edging out TF1 whose original content was responsible for 2.7% of demand for the year.

  • The globally popular children’s series, Miraculous: Tales Of Ladybug And Cat Noir, ranked highest in its home market as the fourth most in-demand show with 22.2 times the average series demand.
  • The latest addition to the Walking Dead franchise, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, follows the title character as he washes ashore in France. Setting the series in France has clearly caught the attention of local audiences. The show ranked higher in demand in France than in any other market in this report.
  • Japanese anime is popular in France, but the success of Invincible (which ranked higher in France than elsewhere) seems to indicate that anime-inspired content also succeeds in this market.

France genre and subgenre preferences

  • France had the highest share of demand for animated content in this report, 16.5%. This is above the global share of demand for this genre–12.5%.
  • In this report, French audiences gave the lowest share of their demand to the comedy genre. Only 12.2% of demand for series was for a comedy show in 2022.
  • The 7.4% share of demand for the reality genre in France was the second smallest in this report and below the global share of demand for this genre (9.8%).

  • The popularity of anime content in France helped to drive the large demand for animated content. France was one of three markets in this report where Japanese animation was the most in-demand subgenre, along with Brazil and Germany.
  • While the comedy genre may not be popular with French audiences, a love of animation helped animated sitcoms reach their highest rank in France. The animated sitcom was the tenth most in-demand genre in France, a rank it also achieved in Canada in 2022.
  • France was one of four markets where sci-fi drama reached its highest rank for the year as the fourth most in-demand subgenre.

  • Two local channels, TF1 and Canal+, each had a 2.8% share of demand for series in France in 2022.
  • Tokyo MX and TV Tokyo both ranked in the top 15 channels by demand in France (with a 3.3% and 1.7% demand share respectively). High demand for anime in France helped content from these channels succeed here.
  • The 5.8% of demand for HBO series in France was the fourth largest share of demand for content from HBO in this report. It was also well above the global share of demand for these series–4.9%.

  • The popularity of Japanese anime in France helped lift Attack on Titan to be the third most in-demand series in France for the year. It had 26.28 times the demand of the average series.
  • Plus belle la vie, a soap opera from France 3, ended its long run in November 2022 and managed to reach 10.73x demand for the year in France.
  • Resident Alien, a US series from the Syfy channel found fans in France where it ranked higher than in anyother market in this report as the 64th most in-demand show for the year with 10.28x demand.

France digital original genre and subgenre preferences

  • France was one of three markets in this report (along with Spain and Italy) where drama accounted for a larger than 50% share of demand for digital originals in 2021.
  • A result of drama’s popularity in France is that comedy has the second lowest share of demand in France of markets in this report. The genre’s 13% share of demand this year was a decrease from its 14.2% share in 2020.
  • Animation saw a more than 50% growth in its demand share in France this year. In 2020, animation accounted for a 4.0% share of demand but that has increased to 6.6% this year.

  • France was one of four markets in this report where sci-fi drama was the most in-demand subgenre of the year. In France, sci-fi drama had the greatest lead over the second ranked subgenre.
  • Historical dramas have caught audiences’ attention in France. This was one of three markets in this report (along with Italy and the UK) where this subgenre was ranked highest as the 7th most in-demand subgenre for the year.
  • France was one of only two markets in this report where mystery drama ranked in the top ten most in-demand subgenres for the year.

France platform demand share and digital originals demand distribution

  • Netflix has lost 10% of its demand share in France over the past year. In 2020, Netflix originals accounted for 57.2% of demand here but this year that has dropped to 47.2%-barely above the platform’s global share of demand (47.1%).
  • France has one of the lower demand shares for Apple TV+ originals in this report. Originals from the platform made up 6.8% of demand for all originals in 2021. However, the platform’s demand share surged toward the end of the year, peaking at 9% in November 2021.
  • Amazon Prime Video’s demand held up well in the French market. As one of the more established platforms, it has been under assault from new competitors around the world. It managed to slightly grow its demand share in France to 10.1% in 2021, up from 10.0% in 2020.

  • 2021’s most in-demand digital original series in France is La Casa de Papel. It has 20.28 times more demand than the average title.
  • Unsurprisingly, Netflix’s French drama, Lupin, excelled in its home market where it ranked as the 20th most in-demand digital original series for the year.
  • French demand for the drama genre crosses a variety of subgenres. Crime dramas (La Casa de Papel), Sci-fi dramas (Raised by Wolves and Foundation),and teen dramas (Elite) all ranked higher in France than other markets in this report.

France platform demand share for drama and action/adventure digital originals

  • France was one of the three markets in this report with the largest share of demand for Netflix original dramas. In 2021 Netflix’s dramas made up 55.7% of demand for the genre.
  • However, in December 2021 Netflix’s share of demand in this category finally fell below 50%.
  • The share of demand in France for Apple TV+ original dramas surged in the last quarter of the year, peaking at an 11.1% share of demand in November.

  • Originals from Disney+ made up 39.6% of demand for action adventure originals in France this year. The platform’s share of demand peaked in July when it had a 47.7% share of demand in the genre.
  • Netflix came closest to reclaiming the top spot in the action/adventure genre in December this year when it reached a 35.5% share of demand.
  • The Star Trek franchise does not appeal as much to French audiences as it does in other markets. Paramount+, which relies heavily on these series, has a share of demand in the action/adventure genre here (2.8%) below its global share of demand (3.0%).

France digital original genre and subgenre preferences

  • Drama accounts for 53.2% of demand for digital original series in France in 2020. France is one of the three most drama-loving markets in this report along with Spain and Italy. These are the only countries with a greater than 50% demand share for drama.
  • French audiences’ 2.2% share of demand for horror originals is the lowest of markets in this report. Additionally, it is a decrease from 2019 when horror accounted for a 3.7% share of demand in France.
  • France has the second lowest demand share of markets in this report for the comedy and children’s genres, with 14.2% and 3.2% respectively. However, the demand share for children’s content increased from 1.8% in 2019.

  • Sci-fi drama is the most demanded subgenre in France for 2020. France is one of three markets, along with Germany and the UK, where crime drama was the second most in-demand subgenre behind sci-fi drama.
  • French audiences warmed up to sitcoms this year. In 2019 this was the 10th most in-demand subgenre but this year it is the 8th most in-demand.
  • Historical drama was the 7th most in-demand subgenre in France in 2020. This is the highest rank it achieved in this report and was also ranked 7th in the UK.

  • Netflix captured a majority of demand for digital original series in France in 2020. With a 57.2% demand share, France is the second most Netflix-dominated market in this report.
  • French audiences express a particularly low share of demand for original content from other platforms. This is likely driven by Netflix’s dominance here and the lack of a major local SVOD producing original content.
  • In the trend chart we can see that despite Netflix’s large demand share in France it has been consistently chipped away. Netflix’s share of demand was hardest hit in France by the entrance of Disney+ and Apple TV+ last year and this downward trend has continued in 2020. In Q4 2020 alone, Netflix’s demand share decline by -6%.

  • 2020’s most in-demand digital original series in France is The Mandalorian. It has 24.7 times more demand than the average title.
  • Netflix’s Lucifer achieved its highest rank of markets in this report in France as the second most in-demand show for 2020. It was 18.5 times more in-demand than the average show.
  • The CBS All Access digital original, Why Women Kill did particularly well in the French market this year. It had 6.6 times the demand of the average show here.

France platform demand share for drama and action/adventure digital originals

  • Netflix has the largest demand share of drama originals in France with 63.8%. This is the second highest demand share in this category for Netflix of markets in this report.
  • In France, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video were in a tight contest for the second largest demand share for original drama series in 2020. Hulu just edged out Amazon with a 10.3% share compared to Amazon’s 10.2%.
  • While the demand share for dramas from other platforms was the smallest in France at 6.4%, this category has seen steady and consistent growth in the second half of the year. In December it finished the year with a 12.9% share of demand for drama originals, more than double its share for the whole year.

  • In the action/adventure genre, Netflix originals capture the most demand with a 34.0% demand share in France for 2020, similar to the platform’s above average demand share overall in this market.
  • In August, following the release of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s demand share reached a high point of 48.4%. Its demand share in this genre has not been this high since July 2019.
  • Amazon Prime Video’s action/adventure demand share has seen largest range of platforms in France. It started the year at a low point, 6.8%, when faced with competition from both The Mandalorian and The Witcher. Its highest monthly demand share, 26.8% was reached in September when demand for The Boys was in full swing.

• Between June and August 2020, audiences in France expressed the most total demand for series in the drama genre. 44.7% of demand expressed was for a series in this genre. France’s most demanded drama in these three months is AMC’s The Walking Dead.

• Comedy is the second most demanded genre with a 15.1% share of audience attention. In June to August, NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine is France’s most in-demand comedy series.

• The next largest genres all hold similar demand shares. Series for children have a 9.2% share of French demand, action and adventure has an 8.3% share and animation has an 8.1% share.

How do Genre Demand Shares in France compare to global trends?

• When genre demand shares in France are compared to worldwide shares, we see drama series are more demanded. The demand share from French audiences for drama is +2.2% higher than the worldwide average demand share.

• French audiences are also hungry for animated series. The genre has 1.0% more demand share in this market than it does on average globally.

• Compared to worldwide content tastes, French audiences pay less attention to reality series. The genre share for reality in this market is -1.9% smaller. Defying this trend is The Voice - La Plus Belle Voix, the most in-demand reality series in France for these three months.

For all titles, which subgenres are French audiences demanding most?

• The higher than average French demand share for the animation genre shows here as anime is the fifth most in-demand subgenre, accounting for 4.7% of all expressed demand.

• This is more than half of the 8.1% demand share for the animation genre. Between June and August, France’s most in-demand anime is Attack On Titan.

• The most demanded subgenre in France for these months is crime drama. French demand for this type of series is around 1.5 times the demand of the next largest subgenre, sitcom. The most demanded crime drama in this period is Netflix's Money Heist.

• The only subgenre in the ten largest French subgenres that is not also one of the global ten largest subgenres is procedural drama. The most demanded procedural drama in France is Netflix's Lucifer.

For digital original titles, which genres are French audiences demanding most?

• Looking now at only digital original series, the French demand share for drama remains the largest of all the genres. Compared to the drama share for the overall market of 44.7%, the share for digital originals is higher still at 51.9%.

• The demand for action and adventure series increases substantially for the digital original market from the overall market, going from an 8.3% share to an 18.2% share. Between June and August, the most in-demand action and adventure digital original for French audiences is Disney+’s The Mandalorian.

• The already small French demand share for reality series is exacerbated for digital original series. Only 2.0% of digital original demand in these three months was expressed for a reality series.
