United Arab Emirates genre and subgenre preferences for series

  • The U.A.E. had the second largest share of demand for dramas in this report (41.8%).
  • Demand for sports content was also high in this market. While only accounting for a 1.3% share of demand for all shows, Sports content made up a larger share of demand in the U.A.E. than in other markets in this report.
  • Documentaries made up a notably small share of demand in the U.A.E. Only 1.6% of demand for shows was for a documentary–well below the global share of demand for this genre (5.0%).

  • The United Arab Emirates was one of only two markets in this report (along with Venezuela) where three children’s subgenres ranked in the top ten most in-demand subgenres for the quarter.
  • Crime drama ranked as the most in-demand subgenre in the U.A.E. It had a large lead over the next most in-demand subgenre, Japanese animation, which only had 65% as much demand as crime dramas in Q3 2023.
  • The three drama subgenres that ranked especially highly in India also ranked in the top ten subgenres in the United Arab Emirates – thriller, romantic drama, and fantasy drama.

United Arab Emirates originals share of demand and demand distribution

  • Netflix originals accounted for 8.8% of demand for all series in the U.A.E. in Q3 2023. This is the third largest share of demand for the platform’s originals across markets in this report.
  • The United Arab Emirates was one of two markets in this report (along with India) where Sony TV content made up a substantial share of demand. 2.7% of demand for shows in the U.A.E. this quarter was for a show from a Sony branded platform or channel and reflects high demand for Indian content in this market.
  • Amazon Prime Video originals were responsible for 3.5% of demand for all shows in the U.A.E. in Q3 2023, making the platform the sixth largest source of demand for original content in this market.

  • Al Madi La Yamout, a Moroccan drama, found fans in the United Arab Emirates where it had 10.4 times the average series demand in Q3 2023.
  • Several Indian series had high demand in the U.A.E. Guns & Gulaabs, an Indian Netflix original, had 6 times the average series demand and only ranked higher in its home market, India, in this report.
  • Young Sheldon, the popular spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, ranked higher in the U.A.E. than in any other market in this report. It was the 27th most in-demand show for the quarter with 6.7 times the average series demand.
