Saudi Arabia Digital Original Genre and Subgenre Preference

  • Saudi Arabia had the smallest share of demand in this report for three different genres–children, documentary, and reality. In particular, the share of demand for digital original children’s content here is well below the global share for the genre (3.9%).
  • The 22.3% share of demand for digital originals in the action/adventure genre makes Saudi Arabia the second most action/adventure loving market in this report.
  • Saudi Arabia’s 16% share of demand for digital original comedies is nearly equal to the global share of demand for the genre–16.1%.

  • Crime drama ranked higher in Saudi Arabia than in any other market in this report. It was the second most in-demand subgenre here in Q3 2021.
  • Saudi Arabia was one of only three markets where action fantasy ranked in the ten most in-demand digital original subgenres for the quarter.
  • Comedy drama was the 6th most in-demand digital original subgenre in Saudi Arabia. This is the lowest rank for the genre, which it also reached in four other markets in this report.

Saudi Arabia Platform Demand Share and Digital Originals Demand Distribution

  • Amazon Prime Video’s originals made up a 13.6% share of demand for original series in Saudi Arabia in Q3 2021. This was the largest share of demand achieved by the platform across markets in this report.
  • The share of demand for original series from Apple TV+ was 10.1% in Saudi Arabia this quarter, the second largest share of demand for the platform across markets in this report.
  • The share of demand for original series from Hulu saw strong growth in this market this quarter–from 5.6%in July to 9.2% in September.

  • Ted Lasso was the most in-demand digital original in Saudi Arabia in Q3 2021. Ted Lasso topped the ranking only in Saudi Arabia and Poland in this report.
  • Every Week Has a Friday, a Shahid original, had high demand in Saudi Arabia for the quarter with 2.79 times the average series demand.
  • The Amazon Prime Video series The Family Man ranked higher in Saudi Arabia than in any other market in this report. It was the 26th most in-demand digital original this quarter and had 1.86 times the average series demand.

Saudi Arabia Platform Demand Share for Drama & Action/Adventure Digital Originals

  • Netflix’s share of demand for drama originals in Saudi Arabia (53.5%) was the fourth largest of markets in this report.
  • Saudi Arabia was one of the five markets in this report where Hulu had a greater than 10% share of demand for drama originals in Q3 2021.
  • Original dramas from streaming platform Shahid accounted for 2.6% of demand for drama originals in Saudi Arabia in Q3 2021.
