2022 Insights - Half Year

Mexico SVOD platform market demand share, genre trends, whitespace opportunities, and top shows for the first half of 2022: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Apple TV+.

This section of the Parrot Analytics MIP Cancun 2022 Whitepaper explores content trends across Mexico for the first half of 2022.

We reveal the market’s SVOD demand share by original platform for digital originals and also present our findings on the genre preferences of audiences here, the whitespace opportunities, and the top 20 overall most in-demand series across all platforms.

Which platform’s originals are most in-demand in Mexico?

  • The 40.6% share of demand for Netflix originals in Mexico makes this the second most Netflix-loving market in this report behind Colombia.
  • However, Netflix has been losing its share to Disney+ original content. The demand share
for Disney+ originals grew from 4.9% in June 2020 to 20.0% in June 2022.
MX1.png
  • Mexican audiences gave the smallest share of demand to originals from HBO Max of markets in this report, 8.2%.
  • Originals from the local platform Blim have performed well in Mexico, capturing 3.0% of the demand for digital originals in the first half of 2022.
MX2.png

How do Mexico Genre Preferences compare to the Global Average?

• Mexico is, alongside with Chile, one of the few countries in LATAM where the demand share for drama shows is smaller than the global average.

• Despite giving the reality genre a smaller demand share than the global average, Mexican audiences were one of the most receptive to this content of the markets we looked at. The share of demand for reality content in Mexico was smaller only than in Colombia and the US.

MX3.png

Where are there whitespace opportunities to satisfy demand in Mexico?

• LGBTQI+ content is under-supplied in Mexico. This microgenre had almost twice the demand for the average microgenre but less than average supply.

• Paranormal shows are another example of undersaturation. There is still a wide supply-demand gap to be filled.

2021 Insights - Q3

Parrot Analytics supply and demand trend reports reveal trends in audience content demand against industry supply for microgenres. Series usually belong to multiple microgenres within an overarching main genre, for example Star Trek: Discovery is a drama series that has the action and science-fiction microgenres.

In this report, we look at which microgenres are most represented in the available series in this market, which are best at attracting audience attention and which have the biggest gap between these two – representing either opportunity or warning. Lastly, how are these trends shifting and what is audience attention moving towards?

The key questions investigated in this report:

1. What does the content landscape look like in Mexico?

2. Where are the largest whitespace opportunities in Mexico?

3. Which genres are trending towards increased whitespace in Mexico?

What does the content landscape look like in Mexico?

supplydemand202104MX1.png

• Mexican audiences have very high demand for superhero content, but there is low supply. The typical demand for a show with this microgenre is 512% of average, while the number of titles belonging to this subgenre is only 20% of the number of titles in the average microgenre.

• LGBTQI+ content is similarly undersaturated with high demand (315%) and low supply (22%).

• The history microgenre is oversaturated. There is above average supply for this type of content, with 53% more titles than are in the average microgenre. However, it does not have high demand in Mexico with the typical history title having only 50% of the demand of the average series.

• Romance is also in the oversaturated quadrant, as it is in most markets. However, the microgenre’s demand index of 95 is nearly high enough to put it in the high demand and high supply quadrant, meaning that compared to other markets romance’s position in Mexico is better than usual.

Where are the largest whitespace opportunities in Mexico?

supplydemand202104MX2.png

• Superhero is the microgenre with the biggest whitespace globally and Mexico is no exception. The Demand/Supply ratio for these three months is 26:1, meaning that superhero content is 26 times more in demand than there is supply in the market.

• The in-demand LGBTQI+ microgenre also has a high Demand/Supply ratio of 16:1. Series supplying this demand in Mexico include Riverdale and Schitt’s Creek, as well as local series El corazón nunca se equivoca.

• The appraisal microgenre has one of the highest Demand/Supply ratios in Mexico. While this microgenre is difficult to incorporate in scripted series, the difference in supply and demand represents an opportunity for unscripted series. Appraisal series popular with Mexican audiences include Pawn Stars and House Hunters International. These are both produced in America, but House Hunters International does feature Mexican locations indicating there is room for a local appraisal reality series.

Which genres are trending towards increased whitespace in Mexico?

supplydemand202104MX3.png

• These microgenres have increased their whitespace potential the most in Mexico compared to 12 months ago. The market index is also included, showing how the average microgenre demand and supply index changed over the same period.

• In all cases, the supply of these microgenres has shrunk relative to the market. This means that the average microgenre added new titles faster than these specific microgenres did. Of the microgenres shown, superhero was closest to keeping pace with the market supply (on the chart, this is shown by the direction between the superhero points being closest to vertical)

• The appraisal genre reappears here as one of the fastest growing opportunities in Mexico. However, despite the increase in demand it is still not a big microgenre. While as noted there is room for local Mexican appraisal series, producers moving to take advantage of this should beware that it is likely only a handful of new series in this space could succeed.

• The change over the year for pre-school content is noteworthy. This microgenre goes from below average in both supply and demand in 2020 to above average in demand, moving it into the undersaturated quadrant. An example series in this microgenre that grew in demand over the period analysed is Cleo & Cuquin.

MX2.png

Mexico platform demand share and digital originals demand distribution

  • Mexican audiences expressed the largest share of demand for Disney+ originals out of all markets in this report. With a 7.7% demand share, it is more than double the global average for Disney+. Mexico was also the market that saw the greatest growth in Disney+’s demand share from 2019.
  • In Mexico CBS All Access (2.5%) and Apple TV+ (3.2%) have the lowest demand share of markets in this report.
  • In the 24 month trend graph we can see how Disney+ further solidified its share here at the end of the year. In November, on the one year anniversary of its launch, Disney+ overtook Amazon Prime Video as platform with the second largest demand share behind Netflix.
MX3.png
  • The most in-demand digital original series in Mexico in 2020 is Disney+’s The Mandalorian. It has 19.1 times more demand than the average title.
  • Blim original, Nosotros Los Guapos, was the 34th most in-demand digital original in Mexico for the year. It had 2.9 times the demand of the average series.

  • Both Amazon Prime Video and Hulu maintained their demand shares from 2019. Hulu was slightly down from 9.2% last year while Amazon was up from 10.5%.
MX5.png
  • As with last year, Disney+ achieved its largest demand share in the action/adventure category in Mexico. With a 26.5% share of demand for action adventure originals it nearly caught up to Netflix, which had a 29.0% demand share in this market.
  • With a 3.9% share of demand for action/adventure originals, CBS All Access originals accounted for a smaller share in Mexico than in any other market. No Star Trek series was among the 20 most in-demand digital originals in Mexico this year.
  • Despite achieving its best result in the action/adventure category in Mexico, Disney+’s demand share in December 2020 (44.7%) was actually lower than it was last December (49.2%). This could indicate that some of the interest in The Mandalorian is fading or could reflect increasing competition for audience attention here.

2020 Insights - Q3

Parrot Analytics SVOD platform trend reports reveal which SVOD’s digital original series are appealing most to audiences in a market during these three months, dive deeper into how this looks for the dynamic action and adventure genre and shed light on the overall size of digital original series within the entire market.

The key questions investigated in this report:

1. Are Mexican audiences demanding more linear or more digital content?

2. Which SVOD’s original series are demanded most by Mexican audiences and how is this evolving?

3. In the Action and Adventure genre, which SVOD’s original series are demanded most by Mexican audiences and how is this evolving?

Are Mexican audiences demanding more linear or digital content?

platform202009mx1.png

• In Mexico, 15.3% of all demand for series between July and September 2020 was expressed for a digital original series. Series originating from a linear network accounted for 84.7% of TV demand.

• The digital original demand share in Mexico is lower than the global demand share for the same three months of 18.1%.

• Digital original series make up 13.8% of the titles, less than the 15.3% demand share. This means that the average digital original series has higher demand than the average linear series. However, this difference is as high as it is in other markets.

Which SVOD’s original series are most in-demand by Mexican audiences?

platform202009mx2.png

• Between July and September 2020, 55.8% of all demand for digital originals was expressed for a Netflix original series.

• Mexico’s demand share for Netflix series is roughly in line with the global Netflix demand share of 56.3%.

• Mexico is a strong market for Disney+ originals. Globally, Disney+ has the sixth highest share behind Apple TV+. This high demand is despite the fact Disney+ has not yet launched in Mexico.

The next chart shows how the demand shares for these five platforms have evolved over the past 12 months:

platform202009mx3.png

• As in many markets, the biggest event on this chart is the global launch of Disney+ in November 2019. The Disney+ demand share in Mexico has tailed off since but will likely revive with the arrival of The Mandalorian S2 in October 2020 and then the official Mexico launch of the service in November 2020.

• Netflix originals series have been above 50% demand share in Mexico over the most recent 12 months, except for December 2019. In the most recent movement, the Netflix share dipped 3.6% from August to September 2020.

• The demand share for digital originals from platforms outside the largest five is trending upwards over the most recent few months. The most in-demand series from these between July and September 2020 is La Resistencia from Spain’s Movistar+.

Which SVOD’s Action and Adventure original series are demanded most by Mexican audiences?

platform202009mx4.png

• Action and adventure series are an important part of the digital original series landscape. Many of the largest streaming services are competing in this arena, with some of the most important subscription-driving tentpole series in this genre.

• In Mexico, series from the almost entirely action and adventure-focused DC Universe beat Netflix originals by 2.2% to claim the highest demand share during July to September 2020.

• Third and fourth is also close, with just 2.3% separating the Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video demand shares.

The next chart shows how the action and adventure demand shares for these five platforms have evolved over the past 12 months:

platform202009mx5.png

• The 12-month chart shows how the global launch of Disney+ had a much larger impact in the Mexican digital original action and adventure market than the overall digital original market.

• In the most recent months, the share for Amazon Prime Video series has increased from 9.5% in August to 20.8% in September 2020. The most demanded Amazon original between July and September is The Boys.

• Over the 12 months, the Netflix demand share peaks in August 2020 with 39.2%. The high demand in this month is mostly driven by the release of The Umbrella Academy S2.
