In this article we look at the top breakout shows of the past week. Breakout shows are the most in-demand series that have premiered in the past 90 days.
Disney+’s live action ‘Star Wars’ series Ahsoka took the top position back this week, as it saw a 40% surge in demand after its sixth episode aired on September 19. The episode, titled “Far, Far Away” appears to have delivered ‘answers on a long-awaited return’ with some previous characters, which could have led to more viewers tuning in to watch the show. In addition, the fact that Ahsoka has only 2 more episodes left to air, it makes sense that fans would be tuning in to catch up with the story before the finale on October 03. Both these factors together saw the show become 61.1x more in demand than the average series in the U.S. this week.
There were quite a few shows that had an increase in demand this week. While demand for One Piece remained at almost the same level as last week (although it did have a minor increase), The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon also had another 8% increase which made it 31.1x more in demand than the average series. The show seems to be drawing in more demand than the other recent TWD spin-off Dead City, likely due to the popularity of the main protagonist among the fandom.
As mentioned last week, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake has had a strong run. This week looks no different for the animated show, seeing yet another double digit increase in demand - a little over 20%, which made it 27.3 times more in demand than the average series. While Fionna and Cake seems to be climbing higher every week, the other animated series in the ranking My Adventures with Superman continued to see a decline in demand - falling by 12% this week.
Hulu’s The Other Black Girl made its way into the ranking after its premiered on September 13 earlier last week. Based on the best-selling thriller novel of the same name, the show aired all its episodes at once and seems to have garnered strong audience attention in a short span of time, increasing in demand by an impressive 68% and taking seventh place in the ranking this week. The show had 20 times the average series demand and it will be interesting to see if it continues to grow in demand next week as well, or if this surge is just the result of audiences binging before moving on to other new content.
