Syfy’s Resident Alien returned for its second season on January 26th. The first season was a hit, and ended up as the channel’s most watched new series in several years – but can its sophomore season repeat the success of season one?
The ingredients for a multi-season hit show are certainly there. For one, it is a sci-fi comedy and science fiction is consistently one of the most in-demand genres. It is also based on a comic. We’ve seen that basing a new series on existing IP is one of the best ways to ensure a show is a hit because the material has proven its worth and an adaptation brings an existing fan base to a new medium.
Season two is so far exceeding the demand of the season one premiere. Demand for the show peaked at 8.7 times the average series demand following its very first episode last year. Fast forward to this year and the show reached a level of demand 28 times that of the average series. That means that season two is outperforming season one by more than a factor of 3. Demand for the show trended upward throughout season one as audiences discovered the new series and kept coming back for more. It might be hard for season two to match the momentum of season one but so far it’s off to a stellar start!
