Netflix gained 8 million new subscribers in the second quarter as the streaming service solidified its lead over rival TV platforms. The streaming service now has almost 278 million subscribers in more than 190 countries after its subscriber growth topped analysts’ estimates. Membership growth in the three months to the end of June was supported by a 34 per cent increase in the number of subscribers to its ad-supported plans, as people tuned in to hit series including Bridgerton, One Day and Baby Reindeer. Netflix introduced the lower-cost ad-supported subscription in 12 markets in November 2022, offering access to its TV shows and films for users who are willing to put up with ad breaks.
