We’ve reached peak binge: now viewers prefer an old-fashioned weekly hit

First the binge; then the diet. After years of not having to wait for the next instalment of a small-screen hit, streaming services are nudging subscribers away from gorging on their latest TV releases.

We appear to have passed peak binge watch. American streaming giants such as Disney and Amazon are increasingly releasing episodes of hit shows weekly, rather than dropping whole series in one go.

Loki, the Marvel Comics-inspired series starring Tom Hiddleston, launched to great fanfare on Disney+ this month. Episodes have been released each Wednesday, and its premiere was the highest rated since the streaming service was launched in November 2019.
