Parrot Analytics’ OTT measurement service is able to gauge global demand for TV content across all devices and platforms in almost every country; and equally, we are also able to assess the global popularity of television content on linear channels and networks. This week we once again report on the top digital originals and overall TV shows for the US.
During Christmas week, three Netflix titles made the list driven by the release of new episodes. The science fiction co-production between Netflix and Showcase, Travelers, was ranked at #7. The series’ second season began in October, but the final two episodes were released December 18th. Per our OTT measurement service, nostalgic American sitcom Fuller House came in at #8. For the first time, in its third season, the family friendly series was split in half, with the latter part released December 22nd. The first half of the series was released September 22nd. Rounding out the digital originals list at #10 was Spanish period drama Las Chicas del Cable, whose sophomore season was released on Christmas Day, December 25th.
Doctor Who appeared in the overall chart this week, aligning with the airing of the series’ Christmas special titled “Twice Upon a Time.” The episode was the last for Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor and also provided a peak at the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. In its over 50 year history, the leading role hasn’t been played by a woman, until now. Another series making the rankings this week, that wasn’t there last week, is Mr. Bean. Though the show hasn’t actually released a new episodes since the 90’s, its popularity has generated enough demand to drive it to #7 – aligning with the holidays when audiences are likely seeking family friendly content. Also new this week, but no stranger to the list, is sitcom Big Bang Theory, ranked at #10. The comedy is currently in its 11th season.
