OTT Viewership Measurement for the US Top 10 TV Shows & More (03 – 09 December, 2017)

11 December, 2017

Today, as over-the-top viewing continues to carve out a growing share of the media consumption landscape, our latest chart demonstrates the ability of our measurement system to account for global and market-specific OTT content demand. Whilst our methodology is not the same as OTT viewership measurement, Parrot Analytics’ demand measurement system allows studios, networks, distributors and SVOD streaming providers to gain an accurate view of the popularity of any television programs (both OTT and linear) in the United States, and globally.

In this week’s chart, demand for the top three series continued to fall roughly 20% week-on-week in the Digital Original Series chart and overall television chart as well; we suspect audiences will be interested in new releases from Netflix and Hulu during the Christmas holiday season. The launch of Netflix’s Dark on December 1, which ranks fourth on our chart, overtook Marvel’s Runaways from Hulu. Dark is the first German-language Netflix original series and follows an increasing trend of internationally produced Netflix Digital Original series, including the Spanish-language series Club de Cuervos in 2015 and French-language series Marseille in 2016.

The German supernatural drama Dark had 21% more demand compared to Marvel’s Runaways this week. Another supernatural drama, Stranger Things still tops the chart with 17% higher demand compared to Star Trek: Discovery; both titles ranked among the ten most popular original series overall. Netflix’s other popular drama series of the year, The Crown, is ranked ninth out of all original digital series after premiering its second season on December 8. Compared to Marvel’s The Punisher, it has 2.3 times less demand. However, it was just behind Orange is the New Black. It is interesting to note that Amazon’s The Grand Tour did not reappear in the chart, despite the fact that the second season was released on December 8.

The overall title chart remains largely unchanged in the top five with four Digital Original Series (including Netflix’s Dark) looming over long-running dramas (Showtime’s Shameless, CW’s The Flash). Finally, just a reminder that our methodology does not provide OTT viewership measurement per se, but rather offers a way to assess the global popularity of TV content across all platforms and devices.
