India genre and subgenre preferences for series
- India was the most drama-loving market in this report. 47.5% of demand or series was for a drama, well above the 39.4% share of demand for the genre globally.
- Animation struggled to find fans in India relative to other markets. The 7.2% share of demand for this genre was less than in any other market in this report.
- Horror was another uniquely popular genre in India. The horror genre accounted for 1.4% of demand for series in India in Q3 2023, the highest of all markets in this report.
- Three drama subgenres ranked higher in India than in any other market in this report, reflecting high demand for dramas and a unique content preferences in this market. Romantic drama (2nd), thriller (4th),and fantasy drama (7th) all ranked higher in India than in any other market in this report.
- The Japanese animation subgenre ranked lower in India than in any other market as the sixth most in-demand subgenre. Weak demand for anime contributed to low demand for animation overall in India.
- The school age subgenre of kids’ content ranked lower in India than in any other market in this report as the ninth most in-demand subgenre for the quarter.
India originals share of demand and demand distribution
- Netflix originals accounted for 12.0% of demand for shows in India. This was the platform’s largest share of demand across markets in this report and larger than Netflix’s global share of demand for shows (9.7%).
- Amazon Prime Video original series also made up a larger share of demand in India than in other markets in this report. Several Indian originals from the platform helped strengthen its position in this vital growth market.
- Several local brands including Sony TV, Zee, and Colors TV ranked among the top sources of demand for shows in India. A large number of successful local players makes this a competitive market for international streamers like Amazon and Netflix to break into.
- The fourth and final season of College Romance, from Sony LIV, premiered in July and helped drive high demand for the show this quarter. It was the most in-demand show in India with 28.7 times the average series demand.
- Several new and returning series from JioCinema had high demand in India this quarter. Taali premiered in August and had 20.6 times the average series demand for the quarter, while Asur returned for its second season in June and had 16.2 times the average series demand in Q3 2023.
- The most in-demand series from Zee was a reality show. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs had 14.8 times the average series demand for the quarter and ranked as the 36th most in-demand series overall in India.
