Romania genre and subgenre preferences for series
- Accounting for a 7.6% share of demand for series, the action and adventure genre made up a larger share of demand in only Latvia in this report.
- Only 2.4% of demand for shows was for a variety series in Romania, making the country one of five in this report where the share of demand for this genre fell below 3%. The global share of demand for variety series is 3.2%
- Dramas accounted for the largest share of demand in Romania. 38.9% of demand for all series in Q3 2023 was for a drama in Romania.
- Crime drama was the most in-demand subgenre in Romania for the quarter. It topped the ranking of most in-demand subgenres in seven markets in this report.
- Sci-fi drama was the fourth most in-demand subgenre in Romania for the quarter. This is the highest rank this subgenre reached in this report, which it also ranked in three other markets.
- Romania was one of the five markets in this report where animated sitcom ranked among the ten most in-demand subgenres for the quarter. Animated sitcom was the ninth most in-demand subgenre in Romania in Q3 2023.
Romania originals share of demand and demand distribution
- Content from local Romanian broadcaster, Pro TV, made up 2.6% of demand for shows in Romania in Q3 2023.
- Another Romanian channel, Antena 1, was only slightly behind Pro TV in terms of the demand share of its original content. 2.0% of demand for shows in Romania was for an Antena 1 original.
- Romanians gave the second largest share of demand in this report to originals from CBS, which made up 5.9% of demand in this market.
- The long running Romanian sitcom, Las Fierbinți, from Pro TV was popular with audiences in Romania this quarter. It had 10.2 times the average series demand and ranked as the 25th most in-demand show.
- Lia–My Husband’s Wife is a Romanian adaptation of the Turkish drama, Never Give Up. The source material seems to have translated well to Romania where the show had 8.7 times the average series demand in Q3 2023, outranking other popular shows like The Boys (8.5x).
- Spy/Master, a Max original that premiered in May is a period drama set in Cold War era Romania. The topic and setting have clearly resonated with the local audience. The show ranked as the 22nd most in-demand series for the quarter in Romania, a significantly higher rank than any other market covered in this report.
