Our demand measurement data shows that in the first full week since its release, demand for The Crown has more than doubled, overtaking both Luke Cage and Stranger Things to become the most popular digital original series. It is the first time since July that one of these two shows have not been on top, indicating that The Crown may be another big hit for Netflix.
Among the other digital originals, demand was generally down from last week. While Luke Cage decreased by about 26%, its fellow Marvel series Daredevil fell by over 35%. Demand for Stranger Things and last week’s breakout show Black Mirror both decreased by nearly 30%, but another recent series, Haters Back Off, was steady. The veteran titles — Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, and Community — were the only digital originals which had an increase in demand this week.
The overall top shows also saw a general decrease in demand, as evidenced by our demand measurement data, perhaps because consumers were preoccupied with the presidential election last week. The five most popular shows are the same; however, while demand for four of the titles was steady, demand for American Horror Story fell by about 28%. The Crown replaced Luke Cage as the only digital original series in the top ten overall, with only slightly less demand than American Horror Story. The only other new series on the list was DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
